Teen Girl Sent Chilling Text to Mom After Being Shot in Stomach While Celebrating Her Birthday

While an Oregon teen fights for her life after a shooting, her mother wants to know how this happened. Naomi Briggs, 16, received a gunshot wound on November 21 while celebrating her 16th birthday with friends in Beaverton. Shortly after the shooting, Naomi Briggs sent her mother, Andrea Briggs, a heartbreaking text message asking her for help. Now, the teen faces a long recovery in the hospital.

Police arrested 18-year-old Sky Korbut in connection with the shooting but have released few details. Andrea Briggs told KGW she feels like she’s living a nightmare and wants to know why this happened to her daughter.

The shooting occurred early in the morning.

According to Andrea Briggs, she received a text message from her daughter about 5 a.m. It read, “I got shot Mama Plz Help me.”

The mom told KGW she had no idea what happened. “I woke up to that text message saying that she had been shot but her phone was off,” she said. Naomi Briggs had gotten shot in the stomach, and doctors admitted her at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital.

Korbut was reportedly driving Naomi Briggs home at the time of the shooting.

According to court documents obtained by KGW, Naomi Briggs was in Korbut’s car when his gun went off and a bullet hit her in the stomach. Police did not release many details about the shooting, other than that the gun belonged to Korbut. Police arrested him, and he faces a third-degree assault in the third degree charge and an unlawful possession of a firearm charge.

Naomi Briggs is facing an uphill battle.

According to her mother, the teen isn’t out of the woods yet. “The doctor did tell me there was a chance she might not make it and so it’s just been a struggle,” Andrea Briggs told KGW.

A GoFundMe account explains, “She was shot in her stomach and it has effected many organs and parts in her body.” Loved ones have raised nearly $3,000 of a $10,000 goal thus far.

The family wants to warn others about the dangers of firearms.

Andrea Briggs told KGW that things change in the blink of an eye. “Hold onto your kids, you never know like what’s going to happen,” she said.

Naomi Briggs’ cousin, Lexi Cruz, told the news outlet that guns aren’t toys. “I think that people need to know guns are not a game, they’re not. It seems like they’re cool and fun until something like this happens,” she said.

Police released Korbut from jail, and he will appear in court on December 2, KGW reported.

Naomi Briggs continues to fight in the hospital.  “Naomi had her 4th surgery today and unfortunately will be going for a 5th in the next day or two. It’s been a bumpy road with lots of ups and downs, but we are staying optimistic!” Cruz wrote in the November 24 post.

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out, sent their prayers and love, shared her go fund me and has kept her in their thoughts. Couldn’t ask for better family and friends,” she added. “It means the world! Shoutout to my Titi, staying strong during a mothers worst nightmare. Keep fighting Nay, we love you.”
