If your kid has been riding around the house on a Radio Flyer Scoot 'n Zoom, it's time to switch out their favorite wheeled toy. Radio Flyer has issued a safety recall on 165,000 of the toys in conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Before you panic, here's what you need to know to keep your kids safe:
1. The recall was issued because the Scoot 'n Zoom can tip over, causing a child to fall forward. So far at least 10 kids have had this happen, causing injuries to at least six of them. Three of the kids actually suffered loosened teeth from the fall.
2. The recall applies only to model number 711, which is noted on the underside of the toy.
3. If there is a yellow UPC sticker on the bottom of your kid's ride-on, your child is safe. This is model 711B, which is not affected by the recall (and is still for sale on the Radio Flyer site).
4. If your child's Scoot 'n Zoom is part of the recall, it should be taken away from them immediately.
5. The affected toys were sold mostly at Wal-Mart and Target stores and online by Amazon.com and Target.com from August 2010 through this month (although retailers have now been directed to remove them from the shelves — it's illegal for recalled products to be sold).
6. Radio Flyer will supply parents with a refund for the $20 toy or a replacement unit. To get yours, call 800-621-7613 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday. American parents can also fill out an exchange form online (note: this is not an option for parents in Canada). The company will supply a postage-paid envelope with instructions on how to receive your replacement.
