Receiving a surprise gift that you actually love (and can definitely use) is always a crapshoot at your baby shower. Sometimes you end up with the exact thing you were hoping for from your registry, whereas other times it's something you had no idea you needed, and then sometimes it's, well, something else. This happened to one new mom on Reddit, who recently unwrapped some baby shower gifts she felt were anything but tasteful (and that's putting it mildly) and handled the situation the best way she felt she could.
"When I opened the gift I was humiliated," the mom-to-be said of the gifts she received from a family friend.
Inside the box were several onesies, each with something different written across the front. And according to the poster, they all said something kind of obscene.
"All daddy wanted was a b— j–" one read. Another said "I'm with the MILF."
Awkward.
But the other one was quite possibly the worst of all: "To-Do List: Eat, poop, suck some t—ies."
WOAH.
"Before people on here give me [expletive] about not being able to take a joke," she continued, "I just didn't really think this was the funniest 'joke.'"
The new mom added that when she opened the presents, she unfolded them in front of the rest of the party -- so her guests read them before she did.
Which was, well, kind of awkward.
"Some people gave let out a small chuckle, some people looked around at each other kinda surprised," she recalled.
Needless to say, the mom was not thrilled. At the end of the party, she decided to ask the gift-giver if she could have the gift receipt, saying, "I definitely wouldn't put my baby in those clothes."
But that response didn't go over well. The gift-giver allegedly told her she was being "oversensitive" and said she "needed to take a joke."
"I handed the gift bag back to them and said 'Alright, well then you can keep these,'" the woman shot back. "They were super offended by that and thought it was an ungrateful gesture."
When she put the story on Reddit, many people agreed: Those onesies sounded pretty tasteless and offensive.
"Ewww," wrote one commenter. "I understand that it’s supposed to be a joke, but I agree that it’s not a funny one. Way to sexualize an infant."
"I cannot believe someone thought those were appropriate gifts?" another person added. "Especially when they knew they would be opened in front of a party of people."
"It’s not your 'fault' for not finding them funny," a third person chimed in. "It wasn’t wrong for asking for a gift receipt, and it wasn’t wrong to give them back when they denied you a gift receipt."
However, some people thought it was a bit tacky to ask for a receipt.
Even if she didn't like the gifts, many people thought she should suck it up and not insult her guest.
"Those clothes are shockingly offensive," one person wrote. "But asking for the gift receipt is just tacky. Chuck them away if you don’t want them."
"This is in really poor taste, and they shouldn't have done it. Baby showers are supposed to be wholesome," another person agreed. "However, I wouldn't have asked for the receipt or even given them back. You do what you do with any gift you don't want. Accept it, and then get rid of it."
"I couldn’t believe all the ‘NTA’ replies here," someone else wrote in disbelief. "You have a party expecting free things for your child. Someone buys you onesies that aren’t to your taste (I personally find hilarious) and you chuck a fit and demand a gift receipt? Jesus."
Honestly, finding a graceful way to tell someone that you don't like the gift is pretty tricky, and I think most of us would have a hard time navigating that one. But boy does it all go to show you that some people really should just buy a gift card and call it a day.
