‘Someone Talks to Me at Night:’ Mom Shares Horrifying Story of Baby Monitor Being Hacked

When our children go to bed, we get a much-needed and much-deserved reprieve. But it’s also the time the night watch begins. Today, thanks to the help of technology, we can rest easy knowing that monitors are checking and capturing our little one’s every move.

But if you’re someone who worries a lot and you are always looking for a conspiracy around every corner, you may have wondered if you and your family are actually the only ones who are watching your little one while they sleep. It’s a dark thought, but it was a reality for one mother.

Kurin Adele made a disturbing discovery after her son had an accident at night.

Kurin, who says she's a crunchy mom of two, shared a terrifying story on TikTok. Kurin shared that recently, her toddler son woke up two hours after she and her husband put him to sleep. He’d urinated all over his bed and needed to be changed and cleaned up.

Kurin said that as she was doing so, she remembered that her son likes to unplug the monitor in his room. He’d been doing so for several weeks. As they were working on getting him back to sleep, she asked her husband to remember to plug his monitor back in.

Immediately, Kurin’s son started crying.

“'I don’t want my camera plugged in. I don’t want my camera plugged in,'” Kurin's scared son told her. “'Someone talks to me at night and it scares me. Someone wakes me up and talks to me. I don’t want my camera plugged in.'” Kurin said that she and her husband don’t speak to her son through their camera, so it wasn’t them.

The two parents looked at each other before reassuring their son that they would not plug his camera in. They prayed over him and his room before putting him back to sleep.

When Kurin went to change the password for the monitor's app, she learned something unsettling.

After leaving their son’s room, they went to change the password on their Owlet monitor app. As soon as they did so, they got a notification from Owlet saying that their old password appeared in a data leak and put the account at a high risk for compromise.

“Who the heck knows how long someone has had our password and has been messing with my son,” Kurin says leaning into the camera. Kurin concluded the video saying that from now on, she and her family were going to be using an Infant Optics camera because it does not use Wi-Fi.

Owlet reached out to Kurin after her video went viral.

After the initial video, Kurin shared an update with her fans about the response from Owlet, the monitor company. Kurin emailed the company to discuss what had happened with her son. She asked them, “How could you let this happen? I’m disgusted. I’m so angry.” Kurin said the company’s response was dismissive. The representative assured her that the monitor data is encrypted but the company would look into the matter further. Kurin didn’t respond.

Later, the company saw her TikTok and sent her another email. Kurin wasn’t impressed. “I’m a little bummed that the only reason they’re reaching out to me is because I have a platform and my video went viral ….” Still, she’s interested to see how the company plans to rectify the situation.
