Leaving your kids with a babysitter can be overwhelming, especially if you are headed out of town for a few days. But sometimes, you get lucky, and your parents volunteer to care for the kids while you’re gone. It’s the next best thing to being there yourself, right? Well, maybe.
A TikTok mom and her husband zipped out of town for a quick babymoon and left her dad in charge of their older son while they were gone. We are so glad she did, and that she documented the comedy of errors that ensued. Molly Madfis' 45-second clip shows us her dad’s mad skills child-rearing, and reminds us just how lucky we are to have grandparents to help us out.
Evidently, the key to a relaxing babymoon is not having your dad babysit.
Molly’s TikTok opens with a picture of her and her husband, Gideon, somewhere calm and beachy. Soul Asylum’s "Runaway Train" plays in the background, and the text warns us that if we want to have a relaxing babymoon, we shouldn’t ask Molly’s dad, Poppy, to watch our kids.
Our first glimpse into this adventure in babysitting, is a doorbell-cam pic of Poppy, and Molly’s son, Arlo, “heading to school 30 minutes late without a backpack.”
OK, but let’s cut the guy some slack. When was the last time he had to be at school on time with his folder and a snack?
Other people’s houses are weird.
It's weird not being in your own home. You don’t know where things go or how stuff works. Poppy had some trouble making breakfast, so he sent a text asking, “Hi, how do I toast!”
The pair exchanged messages and pictures about how to fire up the toaster oven and then where to find things like guacamole and sour cream. He also shared a pizza picture and asked if he should refrigerate the leftovers. The answer seems obvious, but maybe not.
Poppy’s got jokes.
Molly wanted to see a pic of her sweet Arlo, who she surely missed like crazy, and asked Poppy to send some. He responded, “Why? You know what he looks like.”
We can only imagine the looks on both of their faces during this exchange. Someone is probably laughing, and depending on hormones, someone else might have been crying.
Molly asked someone else in the home to share a candid shot of her dad, so she could see what he was up to. And wouldn’t you know it, Poppy was drowning his sorrows in a nice cold beer, and we couldn’t love him more for it.
Everyone loves Poppy.
Poppy endeared himself to a lot of TikTokers who loved his carefree attitude.
“This is the sweetest thing,” someone wrote. "They’re making memories and your son is alive!! He’ll always remember ."
“I’d give anything to have my daddy alive again and do stuff like this ,” another comment reads.
“The fact that you are on vacation and still guiding him to the exact location of items in the fridge ,” someone laughed.
“I love that he managed to raise you and yet here you two are, having these conversations ” reads another comment.
Poppy is more than a babysitter.
Take a quick scroll through Molly’s social media, and you’ll find videos and pictures of the father/daughter duo killing it. They sing, dance, laugh, and entertain. Poppy is good for the soul, and we are so glad that Molly and Arlo shared him with us.
Good grandparents are hard to come by, and it sure seems like her kids have one of the best in the business.
