Many couples choose to recite traditional vows during their wedding ceremony. But a number of brides and grooms through the years have opted to write their own vows. Unfortunately, not everyone pulls it off without eliciting some serious cringes from their guests.
Folks on Reddit recently sounded off on the cringiest wedding vows they've witnessed in the r/weddingshaming subreddit, because as the OP of the thread pointed out, "not everyone is a good writer and sometimes it's TMI." Many of them were real doozies.

One bride brought up her husband's cheating during her vows.
There was no shortage of cringey vows in this Reddit thread.
One person commented: "My high school bestie said in the middle of her vows: 'I love you even though you cheated on me that one time.' I left before the reception."
In the replies, another Redditor admitted: "You’re a better person than me because I could’ve never forced myself to leave. I would’ve needed to see the outcome of that."
Another agreed, pointing out, "Always staying for cake. ."
Meanwhile, a groom felt the need to mention CrossFit.
Another Reddit user shared, "I was working at a wedding and the groom mentioned CrossFit in his vows. Something to the effect of 'I promise to always spot you when you do [exercise] when we do CrossFit together.'"
Someone responded, joking: "The first rule of crossfit is that you must always bring up that you do crossfit. If he didn't bring it up he would have been excommunicated."

Another groom's self-written vows were just movie references.
Unfortunately, it gets worse.
"My friend, God love him, went the funny route and it was 100% movie references," another Redditor shared. "I kept thinking he'd pivot to something more earnest to end the vows, but that was it. Just jokes about movie references."
One bride listed off all the ways she would be submissive to her husband.
Yet another Reddit user shared: "Went to a wedding where the pastor gave a big speech about how women need to be submissive to their husbands. Then it came time for the vows and the bride’s vows were basically a list of all the times and situations in which she will obey his every command. It was so effing weird."
One person responded simply with, "Ick," to which the commenter replied, "Seriously, we were sitting there with our mouths hanging open. Major WTF moment."
Perhaps the icing on the cake, one groom Rick-rolled his bride at the altar.
To top it all off, one Reddit user claimed a groom recited the lyrics to Rick Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up."
The person shared: "Groom Rick rolled the bride. 'Never gunna give you up, never gunna let you down….'"
"Excuse me while I save this comment for when I write my vows ," one Redditor joked.
We really, really hope they don't.
