An infant in India has died after what seemed like a routine medical procedure. The infant, Emin Adam, was getting circumcised and was given anesthesia. This decision proved to be fatal, and the baby died. There are still many things to investigate, but it doesn’t seem as if foul play is being considered. It could simply be that the boy’s body was ill-equipped to handle the medication given.
Two-month-old Emin Adam lived in Kakkur in Kozhikode, India, Onmanorama reported. The infant was taken to a clinic for a circumcision and was given local anesthesia. Soon after being given the anesthetic, the boy began having problems breathing. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he died.
After his death, the family complained to Kakkur police, who filed a case under Section 194 (unnatural death) of the BNSS, South First reported. According to the news outlet, there was no pediatrician on site when the circumcision was performed; there was only a surgeon.
“We don’t yet know where the surgical procedure was performed. Normally, such procedures are done by a team of trained experts. Circumcision is a common procedure, but we don’t know the level of expertise of the doctor who performed this one,” Dr. Arjun, an anaesthesiologist, told South First.
According to the doctor, the only way to know what happened for sure is to perform an autopsy. This way, they will be able to know if it was a reaction to the drug or if there was a genetic issue.
The police’s initial investigation showed that Adam was born prematurely. This could have affected the way the baby’s body reacted to the medication. “Preliminary inquiry reveals the child was delivered at eight months, which may have affected the immune response,” a police official told South First.
“The parents did not inform the doctor about the premature birth. Administering anaesthesia without this information might have triggered the complications that led to the death,” the official added. Police confirmed that an autopsy will be performed.
