It’s an intense time to be living in the United States as ICE agents continue to ravage American neighborhoods, and along the way, some celebrities have chosen to take a stand against the harm (and sometimes deaths) being caused by these agents. However, so far, Taylor Swift isn’t one of them… and after she released a new music video in this political climate, some people are ripping the singer to shreds for not making a statement of her own.
Taylor’s lack of political comments has inspired a lot of backlash.
Though Taylor did endorse Kamala Harris for president in November 2024, since then, she’s stayed pretty quiet about politics — typical behavior for her, and this definitely isn’t the first time that she’s gotten flak for that.
But as outlets including Newsweek have pointed out, this time seems to be different, whether it’s because she has been promoting her music video for “Opalite” on social media after it was released on Friday, or because the situation unfolding in the US is more dire than ever before.
Many of her critics are calling her out on this one.
A discussion about Taylor’s silence has broken out on Reddit, where people are taking her to task (and some are even accusing her of being MAGA herself).
“Until I see video footage of her saying that she condemns Trump and ICE, she’s on their side. Until those words leave her lips and in her voice, not through a statement released by her PR team, a rumor overhead somewhere or bullshit ‘Easter eggs’ scavenged together by her army of complicit harpies, she’s one of them,” one user commented.
Another said, “Her silence is complicity at this point. I don’t see how anyone could be in any doubt as to her true political beliefs.”
Plenty of Taylor’s fans are coming to her defense, though.
After Taylor’s fans were targets of the knife attack in Southport, England and the Eras Tour in Vienna, Austria had to be canceled after it was determined to be the place of a massive, planned terrorist plot, it wouldn’t be shocking if Taylor was trying to avoid another incident by keeping quiet — especially knowing that president Donald Trump has loudly been one of her detractors.
“Need i remind you, last time taylor spoke up politically / about ANY problem in the world FANS DIED. Stabbings in Liverpool for fans dancing to her songs, cancelling 3 shows because of terrorist attacks against her fans… what are you people not understanding,” one fan on X posted.
So far, Taylor has yet to respond to this round of backlash.
