Jamie Foxx Makes First Public Appearance Since Medical Emergency

Jamie Foxx is finally coming out on the other side of the medical emergency that left him hospitalized earlier this year. During an appearance at the Critics Choice Association's Celebration of Cinema & Television: Honoring Black, Latino and AAPI Achievements, the actor made an emotional speech that addressed his health scare. In April, his daughter Corinne shared on Instagram that Jamie had experienced a "medical complication" and was on the mend. Since then, Jamie and his family have shared occasional updates on the state of his health, and by summer, he was finally back to working on new projects.

"I want to thank everybody. I've been through something. I've been through some things," Jamie started his speech, via People, as he accepted the Vanguard Award for his performance in The Burial. "It's crazy, I couldn't do that six months ago. I couldn't actually walk, too …."

He has gone through a lot to get to where he is today.

He showed his appreciation for the journey that his health scare took him on, saying. "It feels good to be here. I cherish every single minute now. It's different. It's different."

"I wouldn't wish what I went through on my worst enemy, because it's tough when you almost … When it's almost over, when you see the tunnel," he shared.

He joked that he saw 'the tunnel.'

He jokingly assured the crowd, "I saw the tunnel. I didn't see the light!" before continuing. "It was hot in that tunnel so I didn't know where I was going. S—, am I going to the right place? I seen the devil goin 'C’mon, now.'"

Privacy was important to Jamie and his family as he dealt with his medical problems and moved toward recovery. In her initial statement, his daughter made sure to ask for privacy, and they never disclosed what kind of medical issue he had. He was sure to acknowledge that during his speech.

"My sister and my daughter were so great at not letting anybody know anything that happened," he said, calling out friends in the audience including Lenny Kravitz and Taraji P. Henson for their support, adding, "you need somebody like that in your corner."

He's come such a long way.

"I want to say six months ago I couldn't fathom that this could happen or that I would be here, but as I walk up here to this microphone and get this Vanguard Award, all I can say is 'Lord, have mercy, Jesus,'" he said, concluding the speech.

It's good to see Jamie again. His fans certainly have missed him!
