Julie Chrisley’s Prison Sentence for Tax Evasion Has Been Overturned by Appeals Court

There may be a little good news for the Chrisley family. Todd and Julie Chrisley, who many fans know from the reality series Chrisley Knows Best, are currently serving a 12-year and 7-year prison sentence, respectively, with each of them facing 16 months probation upon their release after a court found them guilty of tax evasion and bank fraud. Since the couple began serving time in 2023, their family has been working tirelessly to try to bring them home, especially their daughter, Savannah. The family even began working with a new lawyer to try to appeal Todd and Julie’s case, and now, it looks like that hard work is finally paying off.

Julie's sentence will be vacated, meaning she will have to be resentenced.

A three-judge panel of the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals chose to uphold the convictions of Todd Chrisley and their accountant Peter Tarantino, but they found that the judge on the original trial miscalculated Julie’s sentence in 2022. The original judge had calculated Julie’s sentence by holding her accountable for the bank fraud scheme starting in 2006, but they found no evidence of her participation in the scheme before 2007, necessitating her current sentence being vacated.

“While we agree with the government that the district court properly held Julie liable for losses incurred from 2007 on, the district court's calculations included losses incurred in 2006,” the court ruling read. “But neither the district court nor the government directs us to any evidence that Julie was involved in the conspiracy by 2006.”

“So we vacate Julie's sentence and remand solely for the district court to make the factual findings and calculations necessary to determine loss, restitution, and forfeiture as to Julie and to resentence her accordingly.”

The Chrisleys' attorney sees this as a win.

Alex Little, attorney for the Chrisleys, shared a statement with People, saying, “We're pleased that the Court agreed that Julie's sentence was improper, but we’re obviously disappointed that it rejected Todd’s appeal.”

“With this step behind us, we can now challenge the couple's convictions based on the illegal search that started the case,” the statement continued. “The family appreciates the continued support they've received throughout this process. And they're hopeful for more good news in the future.”

Savannah Chrisley also expressed her excitement at the development.

Savannah commented on the appeal in a video on Instagram last week. “We got the opinion back on the appeal, [it] didn't necessarily go as we hoped but we do have a little win,” she explained.

“What this means is that the appeals court could not find any evidence that attributed this $17 million loss amount to my mother. And for that, I am grateful and I hope and pray that the judge can send her home,” she said.

“Right now if we won nothing on appeal, she would be home this time in 2026, so I am a firm believer that she will be coming home sooner rather than later,” Savannah shared. She also asked her followers to 'please just be prayerful,'” adding, “I have some other ideas up my sleeves to get dad home.”

Todd Chrisley is currently expected to be released from a minimum security federal prison camp in Pensacola, Florida, in September 2032.
