What to Know
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s NYC wedding was a real moneymaker in the area — and not just because of what the newlyweds shelled out to local vendors and everyone who worked the massive event. A local artist is raking in cash after he sold plastic cubes of garbage collected from outside of the wedding venue to Swifties who want a piece of the big day, and they have already sold out.
The trash cubes are literally just plastic cubes of trash.
This whole garbage collecting thing is what this artist is best known for, but this might end up being one of his most unforgettable collections ever. According to his Instagram account, Justin Gignac has been selling garbage collected around NYC for more than two decades — including from fun and memorable events, like Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island.
This time, he donned a tuxedo and headed out to Madison Square Garden to collect the trash (with a big trash bag and a garbage picker, of course, because this is a man who comes prepared) the night of Taylor and Travis’ wedding.
“There’s garbage on the floor after the party,” says the listing for the garbage cubes, a slightly altered version of a lyric from Taylor’s song “New Year’s Day.” “Collected from the edge of a love story outside Madison Square Garden, as close to Taylor & Travis’ big day as you could’ve gotten without an invite.”
The entire stock of garbage that was for sale is gone.
Each cube of trash cost $25 plus $10 in shipping, and they are all long gone, which just goes to show that Justin’s idea couldn’t have been that crazy. After all, there obviously was a market for this kind of thing out there.
Some people thought it was all a bit ridiculous, like the one who wrote on Justin’s post, “I really hope this is like satire cause if this is serious I will lose my mind.”
But really, isn’t that the point? It’s funny, it’s a conversation piece if nothing else, and it means that there’s that much less trash on the streets of New York. Everybody wins (but nobody more than Justin, who must have brought in quite a profit).
Some of the trash included was pretty interesting, from a single Airpod to an ovulation test.
It might be the closest anyone gets to a souvenir from the wedding if they weren’t on the guest list.
Unless, of course, they bid on a handkerchief that guests were given at the wedding now that one has apparently surfaced on eBay.
It just goes to show: Sell the merch, and the Swifties will come. Justin is onto something for sure!
