I'm a member of the Melissa Gorga camp. As one of the newer additions to the craziness that is The Real Housewives of New Jersey, she gets a lot of crap. Sure, she may say some crazy things sometimes, but for the most part, I think she's got her priorities in order and cares about the important things: her family and her body.
Gorga recently talked to Life & Style about how she keeps her killer bod. No crazy workout secrets here, she says. She attributes her great physique to simply being a mom.
"There is no dieting going on in the Gorga household! I can't diet! … I'm up and down the stairs running around the house, so I feel I get my cardio in that way."
So let me get this straight: If I were to have three kids via C-section like 32-year-old Melissa and then attempt to keep up with them on a day-to-day basis, feeding them and chasing after them, I'd look like that too? Hmmm, maybe I need to stop hitting the gym and start hitting the sheets.
OK, so it's not all about running up and down the stairs. Gorga also started working with her trainer Kelly Giordano after her third C-section in December 2010. She tells Life & Style that those workouts are weight workouts, not cardio. Ahhh, now it's all starting to make sense. While I may not need to have kiddos just yet to work on my fitness, I could begin implementing more free weights into my routine. I like that option much, much better.
It's important to keep in mind that Melissa, like the rest of the Real Housewives, is now a full-fledged celebrity. Just because she's a celeb doesn't mean getting in shape comes easily. What it does mean, however, is that she needs to invest in her body. That takes money AND time. While she's got money, she's had to find a way to keep active while raising her three kids — and that's what she does in the comfort of her own home. At least she's not using the kids as an excuse to skip out on what her body needs.
Like I said, I may not have children just yet, but I've done my fair share of babysitting. The day after a babysitting gig, I'm wiped. Between playing game after game of hide-and-seek, going up and down the stairs, changing diapers, and using my body as the ultimate piggyback playscape, it's tiring. Do I want to hate on Melissa for saying that being a mom makes her super attractive? Yes. But I just can't. She's right: It's hard work. And she's got the killer gams to show for it.
Do you think being a mom makes you more active?
