If you ask people what the best gift they have ever received is, you will more than likely get a lot of different responses.
Some people value the big, splashy gifts, while others have their hearts warmed by the small and thoughtful gestures that money can’t buy.
But when it comes to gifts for new parents, there is a fine line that can be walked. Some may argue that gifting a new parent something as simple as toothpaste and a razor is just plain lazy, while others may say it’s genius because no new parent wants to be bothered shopping for household essentials.
Still others may complain that investing in a coffee maker that brews from your bed so you don’t have to wait the two minutes in front of the machine is the downfall of civilization, but others may argue that’s using technology for good.
So we’ll let you be the judge: are these gifts for parents downright lazy? Or are they actually genius?
A Bluetooth Coffee Maker

I can’t think of a more beautiful and thoughtful “lazy” gift than the gift of brewing a pot (or single cup) of coffee from bed.
With the push of a button on their phone, an exhausted parent could have a steaming hot cup of joe ready for them by the time they plod into the kitchen, no prep required. Laziness at its finest, in my opinion.
A Grabber Reacher Tool

At first glance, a grabber tool may not seem like the most practical new parent gift. But think about it again: if you’re nap-trapped with a sleeping baby and the remote is juuust out of reach, how great would this thing be to have on hand?
Or, maybe you’re a postpartum C-section parent who can’t do a lot of moving and twisting — having a helping hand in the form of a grabber tool is the literal definition of a genius gift.
Even better, it’s affordable and comes in multiple colors for all your grabbing needs.
A Shower Lamp

A shower lamp, in my humble opinion, is the dream. It might seem lazy to stick a lamp in your shower, but as a new parent, just think of the possibilities:
It could turn that rare shower into the ultimate form of self-care. Or, if you’re like me and tend to shower with your baby, it could provide some more gentle lighting that feels less harsh for a sleep-deprived parent and their little one.
And later, if you use it with a bathtub, the child can have a blast choosing the color to emit for bathtime fun. (This option lets you choose from 16 colors!)
A Faux Hair Thong

Perhaps I’m mistaken, but I am not convinced new moms need faux hair panties to pull off this look; but nonetheless, we love to support a laid-back, natural look.
A Lap Desk with Cushions

My brother once gifted every member of our family a lap desk, and while we initially all chuckled a little bit, I have used that lap desk nearly every single day of my life since then. In fact, I am literally using it now, and it’s so broken and battered it’s embarrassing, but it’s just that handy and convenient.
The key to a good lap desk is to ensure it has wrist cushions and an under-cushion to keep the computer at an appropriate height and comfort.
Especially for a new parent who may work from home, be in school, or just need to use the computer next to a sleeping baby, this would make a great genius-yet-lazy gift.
A Self-Stirring Mug

I can’t exactly think of a reason I would personally need a self-stirring mug, but for the right person and beverage, it could be a match made in mug heaven.
The mug is rechargeable and automatically mixes up your drink with a press of the button on the side. Get that protein in!
A Microwave Splatter Cover

A don’t-knock-it-until-you-try-it-gift, a microwave cover can be one of those small gifts that becomes life-changing.
There is no shame in heat-and-go food options, especially for parents, and adding a microwave cover ensures you cut down on the messes to be cleaned. Win-win!
A Pot With a Built-in Strainer

If buying a pot with a built-in, lockable strainer is considered lazy, then sign us all up for the laziness club, because in our opinion, why don’t we all own one?
The Biaaletti pan with a built-in strainer lid is so popular that it’s become an Amazon’s Choice pick and comes with a 4.6-star rating.
“Best thing I’ve ever owned for pasta,” gushed one Amazon shopper. “The locking strainer lid is so convenient.”
A Shirt With a Built-In Baby Carrier

Could you just buy a baby wrap or a baby carrier? Of course. But is this shirt super easy, practical, and adorable? Absolutely. Some may call it lazy, but we call it efficient!
A Bidet

A machine to clean your most private parts? The ultimate lazy genius hack. It’s technology at its finest, and for new parents, every second counts in the bathroom.
(Also, speaking from personal experience, I actually did receive a bidet as a gift, and it’s truly life-changing, so I don’t give this recommendation lightly)
A Door Hook

For under $5, someone may scoff at receiving a pack of door hooks. But take it from this seasoned parent: Having these on hand can be a lifesaver.
Stash one in a diaper bag so you can easily hang a purse, coat, or diaper bag in a bathroom stall that’s missing a hook (literally, every stall I go in has a broken hanger) or use it at home to hang cups, toddler toys, clothes, or burp cloths.
Keeping essentials close at hand is not lazy, it’s just smart parenting.
A Basket Full of Household Essentials

Last but not least, it might not sound exciting, but a gift basket full of practical, normal, day-to-day essentials can be the ultimate “lazy gift” that parents will appreciate. Some parents have claimed that an unassuming gift basket full of essentials was even their most beloved gift.
Having essentials on hand takes the mental and physical work out of daily life for new parents and gives them the best gift of all: time with their baby.
Some ideas to include in an “essentials” gift basket include things like:
- Toothbrush and razor refills
- Toothpaste
- Hand soap
- Lotion
- Pens
- Batteries
- K-cups or coffee
- Clorox wipes
- Kleenex
- Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or Tylenol
- Household cleaners, like window spray or toilet bowl disinfectant
- Toilet paper (yes, really, we all need it!)
- Shampoo
- Body wash or soap
- Paper towels
- Dishwasher pods
- Laundry detergent
- Paper clips
- Kitchen sponges
- Magic erasers
- Ziploc bags
- Stain remover
