I tried Fashion Nova’s biggest plus-size competitor — here’s the verdict

Not too long ago, my co-worker Alle and I put Fashion Nova to the test. It mostly failed.

As a plus-size woman who loves fashion, I am always looking for the next shop I can add to my list. It's not like we have an endless amount of options…

Curvy Sense saw my Fashion Nova review and reached out, promising that their clothes would fit better for a similar price. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

Curvysense.com is an online plus-size retailer. They carry sizes 0X-4X and and the prices are what you'd expect at Forever 21.

Leading plus-size fashion brands tend to stop at a 3X, making it close to impossible to dress women that wear a size 20 or higher. Kudos to them for going up to a 4X.

After raiding their site, I picked my 10 favorite items, or at least those left in my size. First up, the Generation X leggings in black. They go for $21.00.

I have always wanted to wear cool leggings for my workouts, but I could never find ones that fit my style. No one likes to work out in boring clothes. Unfortunately, Curvy Sense does not have sports bras to complete my workout look.

My body is right at the edge of a typical 3X, so a lot of the time I have to go up to a 3X to be comfy.

The leggings turned out to feel a little too big on me. I would have to size down to a 3X next time. This was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Up next was this two-piece bandage set for $36. Since most form-fitting outfits tend to grab onto my belly, I thought going up a size would help.

The set was so comfortable, but it was very tight on my belly and baggy in other areas.

After finding a workout and a date outfit, I tried on a casual look.

This is the ruffle sleeved stretch blouse in a 3X for $20 with the high waisted destroyed jean in a 3X/18 for $36. The 3X is the largest size available for that jean.

I loved the fun sleeves the top had, but I hated how quickly it wrinkled.

As a 5'4" woman, I am no stranger to rolling my jeans up. However, these jeans were extremely long. I had to roll the jeans up four times before it hit my ankles.

The next top made me feel like I was wearing Yeezy on a Forever 21 budget. It costs $15 and I'm wearing it in a 3X.

I love the back detail on this top; it works for the gym and for going out.

Meanwhile, this bodysuit is $25 and goes up to a 3X. I wore it with the hi-low hem body sculpt jean for $33 in a size 20.

I sized up in the jeans but they were still tight. At this point, I was confused and disoriented about their sizing. Luckily the jeans do go up to a 24.

I was worried that the shirt's zipper would unzip if I moved too much, but it passed the test. The tight jeans, however, dug into my waistline and were a bit uncomfortable.

Having a mullet hem was a fun surprise to a boring skinny jean. My legs were too short to showcase them.

I live for a faux leather jacket. I added this faux fur-trim motto jacket in a 3X for $33 to my shopping cart.

The fit on the jacket was perfect on my body. If you are not a fan of the fur trim, you can just unbutton it.

The overall quality of the jacket was not the best. The faux leather seemed too plastic-y for my taste.

It wasn't until I tried on this lace skirt in a 3X for $28 that I knew I would shop here again.

I will say it was hard to get over my thighs since the waistband has no stretch.

I love to shop for outerwear more than anything, especially if it goes for $41.00. I tried on this sash-tie trench coat in a 3X, the biggest size available.

The jacket is much thinner than it looks. This is definitely not a jacket one can wear during winter.

The trench wasn't as comfortable buttoned up. I had to lift it above my hips to get it closed.

THE VERDICT

Pros:

– Not many fast fashion brands go up to a 4X and Curvy Sense does!
– The clothes are pretty inexpensive.
– I was able to get clothes for various types of occasions.

Cons:

– The quality of certain items does not look as great as the site portrays. Make sure to read the description of the material before you buy.
– The jean sizing was all over the place. A size 20 fit me much smaller than an 18.
– Not all items go up to a 4X.

It's always great to find a brand that offers plus-size clothing up to a 4X. Their denim collection was a bit messy. Having a little note saying if the jeans run big or small could be very helpful. I definitely see myself shopping for inexpensive trendy items at Curvy Sense. I would just be very selective.
