Kids Are Saying the Viral Labubu Dolls Are Evil & Bad Luck

Move over Furbies, because there is apparently a new demonic toy in town. Of course we use that term lightly and in jest, but as far as scary toys go, plenty of dolls and games have had spooky lore made up about them. This toy is called a Labubu doll and kids are claiming that Labubu dolls are not only evil, but also bad luck.

The reason some users on social media and kids in real life have claimed Labubu dolls are evil has to do with posts likening them to other demonic creatures and lore from centuries ago. While that doesn’t make the rumors about the dolls being evil and bad luck true, those claims do add to the air of mystery surrounding them. In case you haven’t seen them, they look like little characters wearing animal suits, and they each have a wide Cheshire Cat grin. They’re kind of hard to miss. But evil? That’s what some believe.

Some people have compared Labubu dolls to ancient demons.

According to Today, Labubu dolls are from Hong Kong and they were created in 2019 by toy company Pop Mart. Much like Milton Bradley manufactures Ouija boards, it’s hard to believe there is a sinister edge to a toy that comes from a toy manufacturer and not a crypt hidden in some scary cemetery that Buffy herself wouldn’t be caught dead (or undead) in.

However, there are theories about why Labubu dolls are evil and why they’re considered bad luck for those who own them. One account on X compared Labubu dolls to the Mesopotamian demon Pazuzu and shared side-by-side photos to show the similarities.

Someone shared a TikTok in which they explain how an episode of The Simpsons seems to hint at a doll that looks like the demon Pazuzu but has more animated features, not unlike Labubu dolls. The same TikTok user explains that she heard a story about a mom saying her child had nightmares about “a black creature with sharp teeth” after she received a Labubu doll. She was unable to eat or sleep for some time.

Things reportedly got so bad with the little girl that the family prayed over her. At this point, according to the TikTok video, all of the strange things related to the Labubu doll stopped.

The Labubu dolls themselves are furry handheld plushies with mischievous faces. But if you’ve heard anything about them on social media, you might have seen references to demons and even ancient mythical creatures. The latter could be because the creator of Labubu dolls, Kasing Lung, was inspired by them when he developed the characters.

According to an Instagram account that featured Lung in a post, “Kasing believes in the existence of fairies and elves was first originated from the Nordic myths and legends, which has become a popular subject in European folklore and literature for centuries, also been regarded as one of the core European cultural values.”
