Mother-son wedding dances are a tradition that are on par with the importance of father daughter dances at the reception. But in recent years, there is a growing trend of mothers and their adult sons setting up these elaborate dances, some of which verge on a bit creepy, considering it takes place on a day that’s about the son and his wife rather than his mother. And when it comes to those mother-son dances at weddings, we have to move on.
In a TikTok shared by a user by the name of Laney, a mother and her son pull a fast one on wedding guests during her son’s reception. They start to do a traditional slow dance that many mothers and sons partake in all the time at wedding receptions.
Except, in this case, they stop mid-sway and begin a choreographed dance. it might have been a way for the pair to bond during the reception, but it also might have gone a little too far for some viewers’ comfort.
One person commented, ‘I almost saw where he came from’ under the video.

In the video, the mother is barefoot as she gets a bit lower than most mothers of the groom tend to do during a reception. At the same time, her son, the groom in question, dances beside her.
The issue most have with the dance itself is that the mother of the groom has an extra high slit in her gown, so much so that one user jokes in the comments that they “almost saw where he came from.”
Look, I understand the sentiment behind these mother son dances at receptions.
They break out of the norm of a heartfelt moment and instead show a different side to what is likely a super close relationship. And if my son asks me to do one with him someday, I will absolutely agree to it. But I might also make sure it’s something the internet won’t target me for.
Under the video, one user wrote, “Did she go on the honeymoon too?”
Another commented, in reference to the mother’s dress, “Holding the slip up and not down when it’s already that high is crazy.”
Someone else said, “Weddings are like weird talent shows with a captive audience now.”
They aren’t totally wrong with that one.
The reception guests can’t exactly get up from their seats or boo a mother and son off the dance floor. Instead, whether they love the idea behind such a dance or they are itching for someone to make a spoof of it on social media, they have to grin and bear it for the duration of the routine.
The choreographed part of this particular dance isn’t even what everyone has an issue with. Some aren’t sure the mother and son should be in such a close embrace at the start of the dance, and they weren’t shy about leaving comments to say just that.
It’s another good point in a handful of reasons why mother son wedding dances that are too elaborate or too intimate are just unnecessary.
