Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. It's a great excuse to eat lots of candy and talk about spooky stuff.
Aside from enjoying candy, I loved dressing up when I was younger. My favorite costume was a classic witch costume; I wore it three years in a row. As I grew older, looking for a Halloween costume was less fun. I often had to improvise a costume because I could never find one that fit just right.
Amazon has so many options for plus-size costumes, so I decided to try five of the top-rated styles on for size.
First up was this cozy bat costume by Leg Avenue ($59.95).
I couldn't believe this costume was modeled by plus-size Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Hunter McGrady! The fact that this brand used an actual plus-size model to sell its clothing made me hopeful that its sizing would be on point.
Amazon rating: 4.1/ 5
I selected a 3X/4X option and was extremely dissappointed.
I felt like I was squeezing into an XL.
It's too bad the torso part wouldn't close, because I loved the hoodie and wings.
I'll take any excuse to dress like a princess. This Elsa coronation dress by American Vogue sells for $42,99.
The sizing for this costume totally threw me, though. The ONLY plus size was marked as "14-22." So it's a sort of one-size-fits-all-plus situation. Never a good sign.
Amazon rating: 4.3/ 5
I liked that the costume included a necklace like the one Elsa wears in "Frozen."
It's all about the details!
Unfortunately the bodice gave me pancake boobs.
Smoosh!
Just because it zips doesn't mean it fits.
I was able to successfully wear the dress, but I could barely move. I could have busted out of this Hulk-style with one false move.
This poodle skirt costume by Hip Hop 50's Shop ($55.82) had a 4.6 rating.
Even with the high rating, I wasn't feeling confident about Amazon costumes at this point of the try-on.
Amazon rating: 4.6/5
I was delighted by these ADORABLE poodle socks.
I would definitely wear these after Halloween.
Finally, a costume that fits! The 3X/4X skirt fit like a glove.
These fun sunglasses and neck scarf complete the look.
I was obsessed with this costume. The only downer is that it didn't include the white top.
Amazon is FULL of sexy plus-size costumes. I chose this Red Riding Hood look by Leg Avenue ($33).
I've never been someone to try a sexy Halloween costume, but this one had me ready to flirt with the big bad wolf.
Amazon rating: 4.4/5
Once again, I tried this in a 3X/4X.
I had PTSD from the bat costume.
To my surprise, it zipped up without any trouble.
I was officially ready to let my inner thot live her best Halloween life.
Then it was time to try a highly rated Disney princess costume ($47.11).
The final costume I tried on was made by Disney. My expectations were very low.
Amazon rating: 4.2/5
BYO poison apple ;)
The headband and cape are included.
The dress and the cape were attached by velcro. I added the bangs for drama.
When I put the entire costume on, I was in awe. I really looked like Snow White!
I was shocked that this was a perfect ballgown length for my 5'4" frame. Often floor length dresses dwarf me and drag on the floor.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Amazon sizes are all over the map and not at all in the standard of a department store. The game plan here is to order EARLY so that you can return or exchange as needed. TBH, I was expecting way worse; the fact that three out of the five costumes fit my body was more than I anticipated based on past Amazon experiences.
Price-wise, the costumes I tried from Amazon aren't much cheaper than ones offered at other popular sites like Yandy and Spirit Halloween. The biggest advantage is that it's Amazon and in many circumstances, shipping is very fast for very cheap, and the return policies are generally better than Yandy, which only offers store credit for Halloween season purchases.
I would shop for a costume on Amazon again, but not at the last minute.
