Some girls dream of being a bride their whole lives. They plan out every detail of their dream day and all that is missing is their Prince Charming. The day he comes along, everything is finally right in the world. It is just a matter of putting everything together, and they can live happily ever after.
From day one, a recently married woman knew she wanted her wedding to be an elegant, over-the-top affair with everyone dressed to the nines. She told guests to wear their fanciest dresses, even if that meant it was their own wedding gown. She wanted the event to be an affair to remember.
Even though she told her guests to wear whatever they wanted, she was not expecting her husband's ex to show up to the reception in a gown she purchased for her wedding to the groom that was called off! Now her feelings are hurt. She recognizes that this might be her fault, but she still thinks it was a low blow.
The wedding was supposed to be a dream come true.
The bride, 30, posted in Reddit's TrueOffMyChest forum because she and her husband, 27, just got married and something unexpected happened. The original poster told her guests to go crazy dressing up for her wedding. Nothing was off limits.
"Growing up, I always wanted a big princess wedding. I know some people see those as tacky and immature, but it was always my dream. As part of this, the theme for our wedding was 'ballroom,' and I told everyone to wear the nicest things they owned and told the women in particular to try to 'outshine' me," she wrote.
"I even went as far as telling the married women to wear their wedding dresses," she added. "I didn't care about being outdressed. Instead, all I wanted was to fulfill the aesthetic in my head that I had for the wedding, which included everyone else looking nothing less than extravagant."
She explained that she had no regrets about letting her guests dress up. Well, except maybe one.
Kate was a bit of a problem.
OP's husband dated Kate in high school, and they even got engaged. They are from a small town, and it's common for young people to plan marriages but then to change their minds. The pair remained friends despite calling off the wedding.
Kate is now married to another man, so OP didn't think having her at their wedding was a big deal. It wasn't — until Kate walked into the reception wearing the wedding dress she was supposed to wear when she married OP's husband!
"When I saw her I immediately went "wtf" but decided to just drop it because I didn't want a conflict on our wedding day," she wrote.
Her husband was not so cool about it and confronted Kate.
Kate told him, "well your wife wanted such a big princess wedding I thought I'd wear this one because it follows the theme more, don't tell me she's upset about it, she's the one who said come in you're nicest clothes and this is my nicest dress."
OP felt upset about the whole situation and needed a shoulder to cry on, and Redditors provided their support.
OK, but why was Kate even at the event?
The question for most Redditors wasn't "Why did she wear the dress?" Instead, it was "Why was she invited in the first place?" People weren't loving Kate.
"I just need to ask, why your husband is still friends with her? She doesn't respect you, I will never be friends with someone who treat my partner like that," one person wrote. "You should be mad at her, she is a bad person, in fact, but why is your husband accepting that? You should be mad at him."
"Ew. Why does your husband want to be friends with someone like her? He's out grown her," someone else pointed out. "And I'm sure she looked like s— in her wedding dress 😉 congrats on your wedding it sounds like so much fun ."
"This is probably the reason why your husband decided to marry you and not her. It was a huge d— move on her part and she had to have known that, bc she didn't wear that dress to her own wedding," someone else commented. "You handled the situation with grace and maturity. With that being said, you have a beautiful heart. Congrats on your wedding!!"
Yeah, it sucks for OP, but can you imagine being Kate's husband?
The whole thing is a mess, but we can't forget about poor Jarold, Kate's husband. That guy was sitting at the wedding of a guy who was engaged to his wife and she was wearing the dress intended for the first wedding. That had to feel horrible!
"I feel bad for Kate's husband," a Redditor wrote. "Imagine you were married someone who was told to wear their wedding dress to a wedding, and that person doesn't wear the one they married you in! I'm sure Kate's husband doesn't feel too great right about now either."
"Kate decided to wear the dress, kate chose to still be in love with OPS husband instead of her own husband, and Kate chose to attend this wedding and be a petty friend," someone else chimed in. "She's a grown woman she doesn't have to act this way. Poor Jarold."
"Poor Jarold, who treats 'the love of their life' like that," one person asked. "He really had to sit next to her in that dress she held onto after they were married at her exe's wedding."
This might be one of those hindsight is 20/20 deals.
There is a lot of looking in the rearview mirror with this one. Maybe everyone wearing their wedding dresses wasn't the best idea. But then again, it let OP see what Kate's true colors are, and she appears to be a tad green with envy. Reddit thinks Kate needs to go and that OP and her husband should live their lives without her.
And Jarold. Oh, poor Jarold. Somebody get this guy a pair of glasses so he can see what's really going on with his wife and get the heck out before it's too late!
