Mom Shot & Killed Minutes After Dropping Son Off at School With Touching Handwritten Note

A family is in mourning after a Chicago mom was unexpectedly shot dead. Romeca Meeks-Blackmon allegedly got into an argument with another woman before the woman shot and killed her. The incident happened only minutes after the mom dropped off her son at school. That morning, she shared a touching note she had left in his lunchbox with her followers on social media. Now, that’s the only thing the boy has left of her.

Just after 9:05 a.m. September 8, 2025, Meeks-Blackmon, 31, was involved in a physical altercation with another woman, ABC 7 reported. According to Chicago police, the two women knew each other.

During the confrontation, the other woman reportedly pulled out a handgun and shot Meeks-Blackmon in the face. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she died.

Police arrested the suspect, but they have not shared the reason for the altercation.

According to a report from WGN-TV, Meeks-Blackmon had just dropped off her son at school, where he had recently started first grade. The mom had shared the note she slipped into his lunchbox that day on her Instagram Stories, People reported. It’s clear from the note how much she loved her son.

“Happy Monday, son, today is the first start to this and you can start off strong,” the note began. “Always remain yourself. You’re the coolest, smartest and funniest kid I know. I love you so much and you make me so proud. Have a great day. Mommy loves you.”

On September 12, family and friends held a vigil to celebrate the life of Meeks-Blackmon, CBS News Chicago reported.

“The love she showed everybody, y’all showed it all back,” her mother, Tina McMiller, told the crowd.

McMiller described her daughter as a loving and devoted mom to her son. Now, the grandmother has stepped up to care for her grandson. She knows the road ahead won’t be easy for him, either.

“I need y’all to pray for my baby,” she asked the crowd. “He has shut down. He don’t want to be around nobody.”

According to police, the person taken into custody after the shooting has been released without any charges. Now, Meeks-Blackmon’s family is demanding better.

“I want justice,” McMiller said, per CBS News Chicago. “She didn’t deserve it. It’s not right, I don’t care what you did.”
