Fears that a serial killer or multiple killers are loose in New England are growing. Since March, the bodies of eight people — mostly women — have been found in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Not all of the bodies have been identified, but one body found was recently identified as a Rhode Island mother.
Currently, police aren’t finding any patterns or indicators that the killings are connected. Still, that hasn’t stopped the speculation from growing on social media.
An eighth body was recently found.
The body of a woman was found near a bike path in Springfield, Massachusetts, on April 22, 2025, Boston 25 reported. According to Springfield Police Department spokesman Ryan Walsh, the body was found unresponsive around 8 a.m. No information has been released about the woman, who was pronounced dead shortly after being found.
Police are investigating what is being called an “unattended death.” An autopsy is also being conducted.
Several bodies have been found in Massachusetts.
Boston 25 previously reported that a human skull was found in the woods of Route 3 in Plymouth. The age and gender of that person has yet to be uncovered by investigators. Skeletal remains were also found along the Massachusetts Turnpike in Framingham.
One of the identified bodies belonged to a Rhode Island mother.
In late March, police found human remains in Foster, Rhode Island. Days later, they confirmed the remains belonged to 56-year-old Michele Romano, WPRI reported. Romano had been reported missing by a family member in August 2024. While police have determined that Romano’s death is “suspicious in nature,” they don’t have any firm idea about how she died.
Her family started a Facebook page to bring light to Romano’s disappearance. Romano was described as a devoted mother of two. “Her children meant the world to her,” friend John Michelotti told WPRI. Another friend told the outlet Romano “would never leave her kids behind.”
Speculation continues that it could be a serial killer.
People has reported that the Facebook group, The New England SK group, which has 17,000 members, has been openly speculating that a serial killer is on the loose. However, investigators are saying people shouldn’t rush to that conclusion.
“There’s a mystique about serial killers,” New Haven Public Information Officer Christian Bruckhart told People. “People are fascinated by them — and the possibility of them. But they do exist.”
“Based on our investigation, there is no indication of foul play or relation to any other death or serial killer,” Norwalk Police Department Lt. Tomasz Podgorski told People of one of the killings.
Romano’s family echoed those sentiments in a recent Facebook post. “In light of the recent comments being made, we know that Michele’s passing is in no way related to any type of serial killer. We have complete faith in the Rhode Island State Police and our Private Investigator that the person responsible will be brought to justice sooner rather than later,” they wrote.
