Jinger Duggar’s ‘Depressing’ Childhood Memory Leaves Fans Concerned

From what we've seen on the Duggar family's reality TV shows and what we've learned in the years since, thanks to social media and tell-all books, it's pretty clear that Jim Bob and Michelle's kids didn't have a typical upbringing. They even celebrated the holidays differently, including Christmas, and after Jinger Duggar shared what she sees as a happy childhood memory on her Instagram Stories this week, fans believe that it's actually pretty "depressing" instead.

The revelation came when Jinger was answering fan questions.

Though the Q&A on Jinger's Instagram Stories has since disappeared, the US Sun was able to capture screenshots of her chat with fans.

One person asked her what her favorite Christmas memory is, and her answer left more than a few people feeling sad about what the rest of her Christmas holidays must have been like over the years.

One gift from her childhood had a pretty big impact on her.

"One Christmas my parents gave each of us a decent sized plastic container full of candy … and topped it with a new toothbrush and toothpaste!" she wrote.

Jinger went on to say that it meant so much to her she saved the container until last year, when it broke.

Some fans are feeling bummed for her.

As the Sun pointed out, fans took to a popular subreddit to share their thoughts on Jinger's favorite memory.

"To be honest I find her favorite Christmas memory kind of sad. I realize finding it sad comes from an initial position of enormous privilege but I can't imagine the best Christmas gift I ever got being a bucket of candy," one person wrote.

Another comment read, "It's very sad to me that her favorite memory (not gift) was a generic gift that was just candy. It wasn't a personalized gift to her. It wasn't a fancy gift. It was an easy, cheap gift to give a bunch of children you can't afford. If that was her best gift/memory. I can only imagine how all the other years went."

The family has always had their own unique traditions.

It goes without saying that buying gifts for 19 children — plus other family members and friends who must also be on Jim Bob and Michelle's list — is no easy or inexpensive task, so it makes sense if gifts weren't quite as elaborate as they might be in other households.

According to what we know from the show, the Duggar kids all draw names so they're only buying for one of their siblings, but Jim Bob and Michelle give gifts to all of their children, including snacks such as beef jerky and pickles.

And of course, we can't forget the annual ugly Christmas sweater party they throw.

It seems Jinger's doing Christmas differently when it comes to her girls.

Jinger and husband Jeremy Vuolo share two daughters — Felicity, 5, and Evangeline, 3 — and from what we know about her family so far, it appears Jinger is set on making her own traditions.

It's not clear if Jinger's treasured candy gift was the main event or just one of the gifts she received from her parents that year, but all that matters is that she looks back on it fondly.
