In 2020, just months after they moved to the United States, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry signed a multiyear deal with Netflix. It was reportedly worth $100 million. Now, five years later, the contract is about to expire. A new report indicates that it will not be renewed, raising questions about Meghan and Harry’s plans.
A source claims ‘things have just run their course.’
The Sun first reported on the end of the partnership on July 22. According to the publication, several factors likely played a role in the decision, including low viewership for Harry’s docuseries Polo, and shifting priorities. A source told the newspaper that the streaming service was happy with the success of the royal couple’s docuseries Harry & Meghan, but at this point, Netflix feels its gotten “all they can from the couple.”
Meghan’s focus on As Ever could’ve played a role as well.
Netflix isn’t the only party that has moved on. Meghan’s attention seems to have shifted as well, as she is now prioritizing her lifestyle brand, As Ever. A source told The Sun that executives might’ve found this shift in priorities a bit frustrating, but they are now “well aware Meghanâs priority now is her own brand, and they wonât play second fiddle to that.” Netflix is also a partner in Meghan’s lifestyle brand.
Recently, Meghan also revealed that she will be taking a break from her Confessions of a Female Founder podcast as she focuses on As Ever. Explaining the decision in June, Meghan said, “I love that there’s so much excitement and desire for another season, but I need to focus on my business.”
Juggling all of her different projects along with motherhood has been a lot for Meghan. She implied that it’s not exactly sustainable. “At a certain point the only thing I want spread thin is my jam,” she said.
‘With Love, Meghan’ isn’t over, though.
Even though Meghan and Harry’s deal with Netflix will reportedly not be renewed, the second season of Meghan’s lifestyle show has already been filmed. Fans and haters alike can expect new episodes from Meghan in the fall.
Although the major partnership is ending, it doesn’t mean Meghan and Harry won’t collaborate with the streaming service in another capacity. According to Page Six, Meghan and Harry are pretty friendly with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. A source told the news outlet that fans can expect “more TV projects” from the Sussexes.
