Prince William Wears ‘Papa’ Bracelet Made by Princess Charlotte During South Africa Trip

Prince William carries his children with him wherever he goes. During his recent trip to South Africa, the 42-year-old Prince of Wales paired a friendship bracelet with a few of his outfits in a sweet tribute to his three kids — 11-year-old Prince George, 9-year-old Princess Charlotte, and 6-year-old Prince Louis. The piece of beaded jewelry simply reads “Papa,” which is what the royal kids call their dad.

Princess Charlotte created the bracelet.

Charlotte is the artist behind the piece of jewelry. She handmade the bracelet, with different shades of blue and green beads, for her dad. William was first spotted wearing the bracelet on November 4. He attended the Earthshot Prize Climate Leaders Youth Program in Cape Town, where he spoke with over 100 young environmentalists between 18 and 35, per the Associated Press.

Prince William also wore it while he played rugby.

William kept his bracelet on, perhaps as a good-luck charm, during a game of rugby at Ocean View Secondary School. He was joined by kids from three different townships, according to People — Ocean View, Masiphumelele, and Langa.

Apparently, the Prince of Wales wasn’t as rusty as he thought himself to be. “He’s not too bad,” England 2003 Rugby World Cup winner Jason Leonard told the BBC. “He said it had been a few years since he played, so you’ve got to cut him some slack.”

He was described as 'humble.'

Others went on to fully praise not only William’s skills, but his personality as well. “He was amazing,” said Joel Stransky, the former South African great. “He was one of the boys, humble and upright human being.

“I ran into him in the drill, and he was really cool about it. What was cool too was he comes into this environment and talks to kids from different walks of life and different backgrounds,” he continued. “To chat to the kids the way he did and ask the right questions was really cool. He’s a good ball player. You could see he’s a natural. I should think he loves it and doesn’t get enough chance to do it. I hope he enjoyed it as much as we did.”

William's South Africa visit is to promote his environmentalist initiative.

The ceremony for the annual Earthshot Prize, held this year on November 6, awards grants that totaled $1.2 million to five organizations to support their environmental ideas. According to the website, this is the first time the ceremony was held in Africa. The inaugural event took place in London in 2021, in Boston in 2022, and Singapore in 2023.

What is the Earthshot Prize?

According to the website, the Earthshot Prize aims to help advance the work of young environmentalists by providing them with support and developmental opportunities.

“Becoming a winner of The Earthshot Prize affords them access to a global platform and profile with their stories being showcased the world over,” the site reads. “We will support them to ensure that their moment doesn’t end with winning The Earthshot Prize, but takes them on a journey that will see their solutions be adopted and scaled to drive the impact we know they can have on our planet.”
