Will Smith Says Marriage Is a ‘Sloppy Public Experiment in Unconditional Love’

We have learned a lot about Jada Pinkett Smith this week since her memoir, Worthy, was released. One of the biggest takeaways has been her complicated relationship with husband Will Smith. The couple has been married since 1997, but we now know they have been separated since 2016.

But it seems like not only is their unconventional arrangement is more than working for them, it’s also giving them the space to reevaluate their relationship and find ways to show up for each other. Will even made an appearance at her recent book event to sing her praises.

Will had a lot to say about his relationship with Jada.

Toward the end of the event, Will got up on the stage and called his and Jada’s marriage a "sloppy public experiment in unconditional love," according to The Baltimore Banner.

"I just really wanted to come out and just be here and hold it down for you the way you have held it down for me," he confessed.

He had an interesting way of describing their marriage.

Will attended the event with the couple’s two children, Jaden and Willow, along with Will's eldest son Tre, who he shares with his ex-wife. Many of Jada’s family members were in attendance as well, including her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris.

"We call it 'brutiful,'" Will said of their relationship. "It was brutal and beautiful at the same time."

He credits Jada as the reason his career has been so successful over the years.

"As I stand here before you today, I am happier than I’ve ever been in my entire life," he continued. "I have achieved every single thing I have ever wanted in my entire life. There is not one thing left that I desire in this world — all of the awards, all of the money, the family — everything I’ve ever dreamed."

Will praised Jada as a wife and mother for the way she showed up for their family.

Will admitted that "those dreams were largely built on the foundation of Jada’s sacrifices," adding, "There were many times when Jada put her career aside so I could follow the dreams of mine."

He also gave her all the credit for putting their family first, enabling their kids to have a relationship with their older brother.

Jada seemed to appreciate having Will's support publicly.

"Can you show up and love somebody for the rest of your life, even when you don’t agree with them?" he asked the audience. "Jada is the best friend I have ever had on this planet and I am going to show up for her and support her for the rest of my life."

Jada seemed to take it all in stride, and at the end of Will’s speech called him "babe." Despite their separation, it seems like she was telling the truth when she said she was in it for the long haul.
