Many couples have different ideas and preferences when it comes to joint access to phones and social media accounts. While some couples feel comfortable sharing everything with each other, other couples prefer a sense of privacy and independence. Wanting to keep some things to yourself seems reasonable — unless your partner makes you suspicious.
One woman was caught off guard when she discovered that her husband had a second WhatsApp account that she didn’t know about. Her husband’s secret WhatsApp account was less troubling than his reaction to her finding out about it.

It all started with a school WhatsApp group.
The woman discovered her husband’s secret WhatsApp account when parents were invited to a class WhatsApp group at their kids’ school, she explained in a Reddit post. Her husband didn’t know how to join the group, so she tried to help him figure it out. But when she clicked the link to join, she was taken to WhatsApp Business. Though she didn’t know what WhatsApp Business was, the woman was unfazed by this at first.
Her husband's reaction made her suspicious.
She didn’t suspect anything was amiss until her husband “refused to put the password in and got defensive,” which is definitely not suspicious at all. Her husband eventually told her that the secret WhatsApp account was “business between him and his brother and that they don’t want anyone to know.” But the woman was upset at this point, since her husband refused to let her see what was on the account.

He eventually let her see the account ... for a few seconds.
After the woman questioned her husband for some time, he begrudgingly let her see the account — “for a split second.” He then quickly closed out of the app, so his wife wouldn’t actually see anything. Again, totally not suspicious. The husband defended himself by essentially telling his wife that it was not her business, and that she “shouldn’t be getting mad” just because he doesn’t tell her absolutely everything he does.
She brought it up several weeks later, giving her husband time to cool down a bit.
Instead of having a long discussion about the issue in the heat of the moment, the woman decided to wait a few weeks before bringing the topic up again. She figured that, at that point, her husband might “be more open to tell me what that’s all about.” But nope. He actually “almost instantly got mad and defensive and said that I’m always thinking he’s doing something wrong.”
The woman noted that she “never brought up infidelity or anything close to that,” but her husband still had a defensive reaction and yelled at her several times, telling her it’s none of her business.
She wondered if she was being too invasive.
The woman decided to ask Redditors if she was in the wrong in this situation. The majority of Redditors empathized with the woman. Many people felt that everyone is entitled to some level of privacy, but that her husband’s reaction made it seem like he has something to hide.
“I think people are allowed privacy, but this ultra defensive / yelling just makes him look ridiculously guilty,” one Redditor wrote.
“While it’s not necessary to share each app you download in a mature relationship, it’s May be a red flag flag to be secretive about messages or apps,” another person commented.
“Time to ask his brother about this cool secret business they’ve got going on!” another Redditor responded. “Must be proprietary information.”
