While we hopefully love our partners, when it comes to the people who created them, that can be a different story. Sometimes in-laws are just … a little off. In these situations, we can only hope our partners would prepare us for their eccentricities. But much of the time, the quirks have been so normalized that our partners may forget to mention the lengths and depths of their parents’ depravity.
In the worst cases, even their own children might not be aware of just how far their parents will go. That was the case for one woman who discovered her mother-in-law snooped through her belongings, took her sex toy, and hid it for months.

A woman's special toy just up and disappeared from her underwear drawer.
A woman came to Reddit with one tale about her mother-in-law just so she could ask users what this woman might have been thinking. She shared that before moving, she and her partner moved in with her man’s parents. They lived in the basement while they waited to find a place of their own. During that time, the OP noticed that the “spicy toy” she kept in her underwear drawer was missing.
“For a few weeks I thought I had completely lost my mind, but eventually told my partner that I thought his mother might have taken it,” she explained. She knew it was a strange assumption. She barely believed it herself. But eventually, her partner asked his mom if she had seen it.

When her partner asked his mother if she'd seen it, she burst into tears.
Her response was telling. She “acted horrified and started crying.” The OP revealed that her MIL has a history of attempting to humiliate her and likely thought the toy would be another opportunity to do so. But joke was on her. Her partner knew about the toy. The OP was not ashamed. But the story doesn’t end there. Not only was her toy missing, so were her pay slips.
After the couple moved out, they asked her again if she’d seen the toy. The MIL launched into full theatrics, sobbing and howling in the street, asking how the OP could “accuse her” like this. The MIL then immediately stopped crying, kissed her son goodbye and walked away like nothing happened.
Months later, the MIL returned the toy at a public event.
The OP was vindicated months later when she and her partner had an opera performance at a golf club. The MIL showed up to the performance with a huge cardboard box, smiling. She walked up to the OP and said, “Sweetie, you'll never guess what I found!!” Inside the box was the toy along with her pay slips, which had all been opened.
“I think she brought it there to try to humiliate me in front of people or get some kind of reaction out of me,” the OP surmised. But she wanted to know what the Reddit community thought about this woman’s actions. Was she trying to assert dominance, make her feel ashamed, did she, God forbid, USE.THE.TOY?!
Reddit users offered suggestions on how to handle this.
Redditors had some ideas.
“This woman hates you and definitely wanted to publicly humiliate you,” one user wrote. “She took the pay stubs because she is nosey and wanted to know your Financials.”
Others offered advice on how to handle such a person. “I would have loudly said ‘I told you I would buy you your own toy, please don't use mine,’” someone commented.
Others said the OP should involve the authorities.
And some people advised the OP to take this woman’s actions seriously and protect herself.
“Lock your credit!” one user warned. "Paystubs contain enough personal information to steal your identity and take out loans in your name."
Another suggested starting a paper trail: “She's crazy and vindictive. I suggest filing a police report on this incident. This will show she IS a problem.”
We have to admit it couldn’t hurt to file a report. If her partner won’t do more to curtail his mom’s bizarre and illegal actions, the authorities might.
